SO WOT'S VIS ALL ABOUT VEN?
Basically, Hack And Slash is a role playing game.
No, this does not involve getting hold of bread rolls and playing games
with them (this I will review next time!), but means that you take on the
role of a character, and control his/her destiny.
SIGNING ON
After deciding what alias you will play under, there are a whole heap of
different playing characters at your disposal, each with its own
advantages and disadvantages.
I prefer the Fighter as my character, who is a mighty swordsman (sorry -
swordsperson - we must not upset those feminists out there!).
Well, once you've decided on your character, you are ready to play.
LEND US $10 - NON REFUNDABLE!
The first thing you need to do is gain some Johnny Cash.
Once you have some dosh, you can afford better weaponry, armoury, and
magic spells.
There are 3 very good ways in which you can boost your finances, which I
will now briefly describe:-
JOUSTING
This is a game which involves donning your best silvers, and jumping
onto the back of a rather large horse with a carpet draped over its back
for good measure.
You hold something that resembles one of those long full-butt billiard
cues, with the aim being to knock your opponent of his/her horsey as yous
both ride past each other.
The first to win 3 passes collects the Johnny Cash and gains some extra
jousting strength points, while thee who losses shall have points
extracted.
PICK POCKETS
You have to go to the village square for this one, and try to steal some
cash from the folk that pass by.
As soon as you pinch the dosh, you flee in a effort to avoid being
caught.
If you're arrested it's GAME OVER!
It does appear however that, the greater your level, the better your
chances are of pulling it off.
GAMBLING
Yep! Time to do one of those things that is part of the HSC requirement
in Adelaide - visit the Casino!
There are card games, lottos, pokies and other things here, but for the
best pay out I suggest trying your hand at the roulette wheel.
You must place a bet on whether the little silver sphere will land on an
odd or even number.
Bets pay out double what you place, e.g. - If you place 100c on an odd
number and win, you will cash in 200c.
Depending on the amount, I normally bet with the cash I gained from
picking pockets.
HAVE A GOOD DAY - EASTFIELD SHOPPING!
You can buy things with the cash you currently have in your hand.
If it's not enough then I'm afraid you'll have to visit your local ANZY
Bank to check out your available balance.
You can produce a list of the weapons and armour that are within your
price range.
May I suggest that when you do upgrade, that you sell your old
weapon/armour first.
This will give you a little bit more cash to play with.
You can buy poisons too, which you can pour over your weapon, helping it
to inflict a more deadly blow.
HACKING AND SLASHING!
Well, this is what it's all about really. Getting down to some hard
core blood shed!
Already outlined above, you can fight your opponents in Jousts, but 2
other fights are also open to you...
USER FIGHTS
You can only fight users who are 3 levels above or below you.
When you select your opponent, you will have the choice of attacking,
casting spells, or (if things are getting a little out hand), retreating!
Should your opponent inflict a damaging blow, you will have to visit the
hospital at the square, and pay for some treatment.
If you defeat an opponent who owns better items than you, you will gain
possession of those items.
Useless items will be sold off.
There's only one down fall to user fights. If your fighting an opponent
several levels below you - and they win - your opponent will be promoted
to your level.
MONSTER FIGHTS
Same fighting rules as above basically, but you can choose the level of
monster to fight.
As a rule of thumb I suggest upgrading your monster level, for every 4
levels or so that you progress.
You stand a better chance of winning then.
TIT BITS
You can also visit the local for a pint, and start brawls and debates
with other users.
When you have enough cash, you can buy ships and do battle on the oceans
against sea-nasties.
There are dungeons for you to explore which help you gain more
experience points, and you can form your own "Merry" gangs.
HEALTH WARNING!
Without any doubt, H&S is very addictive.
But it is YOU against THEM!
Take a tip from a H&S veteran who learnt the hard way - DON'T TRUST
ANYONE!
You may have other users wanting to form alliances with you, but do they
have YOUR best interests at heart, or their OWN?
One player lost all his powerful artillery when he attacked me while I
was offline, and pleaded for me not to attack him in the future.
We worked out a neat alliance to "Take Over The World" (well, the game
at least), and what did he do? Next time I log into the game, I found
that he back stabbed me and re-gained all his powerful artillery!
Yes, H&S is a really fun game to play, but in the words of a famous
sergeant on Hill Street Blues...
LET'S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
